Mushrooms in the yard... but what?

© 2010 Joshua Stark

A quick post question:  Can anybody recognize this mushroom?

This isn't a trick question, nor will I believe you enough to eat it.  I'm just curious, because we've got a great little family of 'em growing up right now.

Looks to me like agaricus campestris, common meadow mushroom -- although the gills should be more pink. I'd get a copy of David Arora's Mushrooms Demistifyed out of the library if you really want to figure it out. He's got all the scientific keys. Personally, I'm leery of white gilled mushrooms because there are a couple of poisonous ones -- I stick to boletus edulis, chanterelles, oyster mushrooms and morels.

Charlotte, thanks for the response! I'm leery of all mushrooms but morels and puffballs, so don't worry about me.

And thanks for stopping by my blog, I hope you enjoy what you find.

I'm with Charlotte on this one. I am very very very leery of all Agaricus, but that's a good guess. The gills could pink up a bit when opened and really nail it.

But, even with a rock solid I.D. I just don't eat that family unless I buy it in a store.

Thanks, Bpaul, and thanks for coming on over from LOTM.

No worries, we are no culinary adventurers.

I knew a guy (in Berkeley, of course) who just up and ate whatever mushroom seemed about the right shape. Over and over again. I'm surprised he survived the first week. Gave me the HEEBS to see him do it.

I will say, he only ate a small amount... and waited to get high. Dreamer.

It ia probably the California meadow mushroom, the slightly toxic cousin of agaricus campestris. A real "pink" will not stain yellow when you scritch the stalk. I am betting a lot of money that yours will stain yellow. Don't eat them, as they lead to mild nausea and excessive fartiness...
