Does anybody know how to quickly get rid of weed seeds from soil? I want to transfer some yard dirt to my raised beds, but I don't want a bunch of grass.
If you are just trying to transfer straight dirt, not keep anything currently growing, I used to put a black trash bag over the bed, and punch holes for the seeds I wanted. The heat it retains (being black and an insulating layer) encourages weeds to sprout, the moisture retained (because it's a moisture barrier) aids sprouting, and the black plastic itself means any weeds that sprout then get no photosynthesis, and no way to grow up.
Heavy mulching would probably do the trick as well, too.
